Reasons why I suck at blogging + 3 ladies who don’t

Honest to blog…

Here in the blogging world, it’s easy to feel like I don’t measure up because I’m not just like other bloggers. It’s a weird comparison–blogging is all about being yourself, but there’s a big pressure to be just like bigger, more popular blogs. It is tough sometimes, but I’ve learned that it’s good to blog about things that are different than other people. I may have less readers but those readers know they can’t find a blog just like mine anywhere else. And yes, this is more than slightly tongue-in-cheek.

So here are four reasons why I suck at blogging, followed by a few ladies who don’t suck at blogging.

1. I don’t make DIYs all the time. If you’ve been around here long enough, you know that I made one diy, once–envelopes made out of magazine pages. That took about ten minutes. I don’t sew my own clothes, much less publish pictures and patterns for them. And I don’t make all the decorations for my house out of mason jars, god forbid.

Anne makes, well, everything. Especially this finger-knit love pillow.

2. I don’t take beautiful pictures of my food. Come to think of it, no food that I make ever looks beautiful. Let’s just say that I’ve lit toast on fire before and put silverware in the microwave more times than I care to admit.

Amanda K by the Bay makes ice cream, every Sunday. Most recently, Kahlua Chocolate Chunk with Caramel Swirls!

3. I don’t take pictures of my outfits. It’s not that I don’t dress cute, I just can’t figure out how to (a) take pictures of myself using just an iPhone or (b) not be awkward in pictures. (Side note: I really would like to start posting pictures, because you know, I have great style and all. Anyone have advice for doing it on an iPhone/without a photographer?)

Jessica at Jeans and a Teacup, looking adorbs, as always.

4. Also, I don’t even have a camera (other than my iPhone), so I can’t post pretty pictures of every single thing I do. I use stock pictures or things from Pinterest, but they’re rarely my own. (This is the one exception when I took pictures.)  For any of you bloggers who also are not too camera-handy, here’s a great source for pretty stock pictures! Also, Flickr’s creative commons are great too.

What makes you different than other bloggers–why do you “suck” at typical blogging? Any tips for me to on reason number 3?

    • Ahh, no way! She is just too cute. And she and I have such similar style–except I can’t always afford J.Crew and Anthro on my ice-cream-shop-manager paycheck!

  1. Love this! There is pressure to live up to bigger bloggers. Take better pictures, do more projects. I suck at typical blogging because though I do DIYs, I’m not creating anything with chevron or mason jars! And sorry, I can’t help you with the self-photographing pictures. Good luck!

    • Haha let’s create the revolution against chevron!! Actually, I do sort of like chevron, it’s just a bit overdone. But thanks for visiting and sharing your encouraging thoughts!

  2. Ha, I loved this. I don’t really do any of these either, although I could take nice pictures thanks to my DSLR, I just don’t whip it out as often as I should :(

  3. Haha, I really identify with this :P I am trying to make OOTD and haul videos and put them on my blog, but I look way too awkward. Also, I’m a perfectionist, which screws me over when I’m supposed to write a casual post about how my day went.

    • Haha I know right! I honestly don’t understand how people get such good pictures of themselves…boyfriends and husbands I guess? I don’t think H is interested in taking pictures of my outfits every day…

  4. You are the cutest! I so wish we could be real life friends :D I too share in the struggle with only taking pictures via iPhone. If you come across any tips, please share! Also, I LOVE your taste in music.

    • Aww you are too sweet! And I hardly even bother with my iPhone! Although, Aukele at 91dash.com suggested I should get a tripod and just use my phone for ootd posts–maybe I’ll try it! And thanks, about the music! I’d love to see a playlist from you sometime!

  5. I have the same camera problem! I do have a snap & shoot sony camera.. but that can’t even come close to comparing with the pictures most bloggers post with their professional cameras. I also have not, and probably never will find my blogging niche. Everyone says it’s so vital but I can’t seem to pin down just one topic to blog about.

    • Same same…I think I have a digital camera somewhere…anyways–me neither! It’s so hard to describe my “niche”, it’s like music and books and science and all these things mishmashed together! But I think that’s okay too.

  6. This is so cute Allie. I love it. I try not to get too caught up comparing myself to other blogs but it’s not always easy especially when you have to read a hundred other blogs a week in order to stay current and involved. You do a fantastic job though. I always find what you have to say interesting and presented in a way that’s fun to read. This was especially helpful to me right now since I’m in a bit of a slump. Keep up the good work Allie!
